2024 home opener of Washington Nationals features D.C. mayors

The Washington Nationals’ 2024 home opener on April 1 against the Pittsburgh Pirates will feature D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and former Mayor Anthony Williams in specific roles to give the event a local flavor.

Williams will throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the 4:05 p.m. game and Bowser will give the call to “play ball.” Dwight Clyde “D.C.” Washington, a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Army, is scheduled to perform the national anthem for the third consecutive home opener.

Opening Day pregame festivities include an appearance by the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales, live music from 19th Street Band and DJ Stylus Chris, caricature artists, face painting, balloon twisters and other activities.

Gates open at 2 p.m. and fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 3:30 p.m. for pregame ceremonies.

Williams will also receive the 2024 Power of Baseball Award, presented by The Annette M. and Theodore N. Lerner Family Foundation at the Nationals Homecoming Gala on Tuesday.

Williams, who served as the District’s mayor from 1999-2007, is widely credited with playing a significant role in professional baseball returning to the District. The Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy in Southeast is a product of the community benefits package that brought the game back to the city.
