Nationwide — Rachael Simba, a woman from Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, gave birth to quadruplets after doctors initially told her she was expecting triplets. She delivered four premature babies at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center in a rare and unexpected case.
Simba became pregnant in September and went through a difficult pregnancy in the Kilimanjaro region, according to The Citizen. Doctors first advised her to rest starting in her third month. By six months, they told her she was carrying twins, then later updated it to triplets.
On April 22, she arrived at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center with no clear signs of labor. She suddenly felt pain, and medical staff rushed her into surgery. During the emergency C-section, doctors discovered she was carrying four babies instead of three.
The medical team delivered the babies at 31 weeks and two days of pregnancy. Two baby girls shared one amniotic sac and weighed 2.2 pounds each. A baby boy weighed 3.5 pounds, while another baby girl weighed 2.8 pounds. All four newborns were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit due to low birth weight.
KCMC obstetrician Dr. Gedion Edward said quadruplet pregnancies are rare, with an estimated occurrence of about one in 6,000 cases. He also noted that the babies had different developmental conditions and were positioned in separate sacs, except for the two girls who shared one.
Nurse Secilia Jonathan said staff prepared for surgery after confirming Simba’s cervix had dilated to three centimeters. She added that hospital protocol requires a caesarean section for pregnancies involving more than twins.
Simba said she struggled with basic movement during her pregnancy and now needs help covering medical expenses. She said her newborns may stay in the hospital for more than a month while they receive ongoing care, including oxygen support, lung maturity drugs, milk, and medical tests.
“The costs are very high, and we are told we may stay here for more than a month depending on their progress,” said Simba.
