Nationwide — Anthoneil Williams II, a 17-year-old African American teen from Austin, Texas, was fatally shot by police after responding to a 911 call from his own phone about a possible armed person. Police later determined Williams was unarmed and only had a water bottle in his waistband.
The 911 call came early Friday morning from Williams’ phone after someone reported seeing a person in a parking lot who appeared to have a gun. The caller told dispatchers the person was repeatedly touching his waistband and holding something that looked like a firearm, though they were unsure.
When officers arrived at a nearby community park, they found Williams and ordered him to keep his hands up, according to police-released body camera footage. Officers said Williams lifted his shirt, reached toward his waistband, and then raised his hands in a way that made them believe he was pointing a weapon.
Three officers fired multiple shots at Williams near a playground. Emergency responders tried to save him, but he died at the scene. Police later confirmed he did not have a gun and was carrying only a water bottle.
According to CNN, police released audio of the 911 call, which showed dispatchers asking if the caller needed police, fire, EMS, or mental health services. The caller requested police assistance and reported seeing someone who appeared to have a firearm.
Authorities said dispatchers asked whether the situation involved a mental health crisis, but the call ended before more details could be collected. Officers attempted to call back but were unable to obtain additional information.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said investigators believe the incident may have been a case of “suicide by police,” though the investigation remains ongoing. Police later confirmed that the original 911 call came from Williams’ own phone. Davis said officers had only seconds to respond during what police described as a rapidly unfolding situation.
The three officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave while the case is reviewed. The Austin Police Department is conducting criminal and internal investigations, while the Travis County District Attorney’s Office will complete an independent review after the police investigation ends.
Williams’ death has led to protests, vigils, and calls for accountability from community members and local officials. Friends described him as a caring person who always put others before himself.
Residents gathered at the park where Williams was killed to remember him and demand answers. Community members also called for stronger mental health resources and other ways to respond to crisis situations.
