Trump Attacks Smithsonian’s Black History Museum, Says It Divides America

Nationwide — President Donald Trump’s latest executive order targets the Smithsonian Institution, accusing it of spreading “divisive” ideologies. His attack includes the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, and his order pushes for a more traditional, unity-focused narrative, sparking criticism from historians and cultural advocates who fear this move will oversimplify American history.

Trump’s directive, led by Vice President JD Vance, seeks to reshape how the Smithsonian presents American history through its museums and programs. The order calls for new board members aligned with Trump’s vision, focusing on a more traditional, less nuanced portrayal of the nation’s past. Trump believes the Smithsonian has embraced a “race-centered” ideology that misrepresents American values and history, according to AP News.

While the Smithsonian has long been a symbol of American achievement, Trump’s order accuses the institution of promoting a narrative that divides rather than unites. The National Museum of African American History and Culture is specifically targeted, with Trump claiming it perpetuates division instead of fostering national unity.

Beyond the Smithsonian, the executive order also includes a call for investigations into federal parks and monuments. Trump wants to examine whether these sites have been altered to misrepresent historical events or figures, referencing his previous push to rename Alaska’s Mount Denali back to Mount McKinley.

Under the new order, future federal funding for the Smithsonian will depend on whether its programs align with Trump’s view of American values. Exhibits or initiatives that promote ideas Trump deems divisive—such as those focused on race or gender—could lose their funding.
