Three Black Siblings Create Heartfelt Children’s Book to Honor Late Grandfather and Celebrate Elders

Nationwide — Three African American siblings from Rockford, Illinois, – Antonia Royal-Whitmore, Darby Whitmore, and Royal Whitmore – were determined to keep his spirit alive when their grandfather, Morris Royal Sr., passed away earlier this year. Their new children’s book, Before You Go to Heaven, is a tender, beautifully illustrated tribute to their beloved grandfather — and to grandparents and elders everywhere who leave an unforgettable mark on our hearts.

Before You Go to Heaven follows the story of grandchildren cherishing moments with their grandparents, offering both a celebration of life and a gentle reminder to treasure time together. Written by the three siblings and inspired by true family memories, the book encourages children to honor the elders who shaped their lives, whether they are still with us or remembered fondly.

They will host a book signing event on Sunday, September 21, 2025, from 2pm to 4pm at Macedonia Baptist Church, located at 1720 Morgan Street, Rockford, IL 61102. All are invited to bring their family to meet the authors, get a personal copy signed, and celebrate the love of grandparents together.

“In our family, love for our elders is everything,” says Antonia. “Our grandfather funded my very first book and cheered me on every step of my journey. This story is our way of saying thank you — and encouraging other families to share their love while they can.”
