Nationwide — Rapper 50 Cent is being criticized for encouraging Louisiana voters to support Amendment 2, a Republican-led initiative that proposes changes to the state tax code. In a last-minute video shared through his G-Unity Foundation, he emphasized the amendment’s potential to bring jobs and economic growth to the state.
However, voters in Louisiana overwhelmingly rejected all four of the proposed constitutional amendments, including a major plan to revamp the state’s tax and budget systems.
50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, supported the amendment because he owns property, businesses, and a major film studio in Louisiana. He encouraged voters to support the amendment, saying, “I want to see more jobs and prosperity in the state of Louisiana. This is why I support Amendment 2 on your ballot this Saturday,” according to KTAL.
State Representative Tammy Phelps, however, expressed doubts about the amendment and urged Shreveport voters to consider the long-term effects. She warned that changing the state’s constitution could have lasting impacts on existing policies.
It turned out, though, that 50 Cent’s last-minute endorsement was not enough because among the rejected amendments was a sweeping overhaul of how Louisiana manages its tax revenue and state budget.
