The New York Police Department (NYPD) released body camera footage of migrants attacking two police officers in Times Square.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) released body camera video of the late January attack on two police officers allegedly committed by a group of migrants.
According to NBC New York, after the video was released to the press February 8, there are differences regarding how the fight started. The footage reveals what led to the alleged assault by the migrants when they were ordered to move from the section of the sidewalk where they were standing.
When the police officers approached the group, one immediately yelled at them and said, “A Vamos,” which means “Let’s go” in Spanish. The group hesitated but then proceeded to move from the spot. Yohenry Brito, who was arrested and was wearing a yellow jacket, went to push a stroller, and the group started singing in Spanish.
As Brito walked away, he said something out loud in Spanish—according to NBC New York it was “looks like Ugly Betty”). That allegedly set off the police officer who was walking right behind him. The officer grabbed Brito and threw him against the wall, which led to the police officers being attacked on the street.
PIX11 reported that NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said that the police officers allegedly went up to the group because they were blocking the sidewalk. He said, “Everybody disperses except Brito. He turned around and got confrontational with police officers.”
Yet, the video seemingly reveals that it didn’t happen in that way. The police officer grabbed Brito after he mad the remarks as he is pushing the stroller away.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said a grand jury indicted seven people in the assault on the police officer. Brito was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, obstructing governmental administration, tampering with physical evidence, and third-degree hindering prosecution.
Yorman Reveron and Darwin Andres Gomez-Izquiel were charged with two counts of second-degree assault and obstructing governmental administration. Kelvin Servita Arocha was charged with second-degree assault and obstructing governmental administration, while Wilson Juarez was charged with tampering with physical evidence and third-degree hindering prosecution.
The names of the two other indicted peple were not released as they have not been arrested.
