While the legacy of Negro League Baseball has often been highlighted, the equally compelling narrative of Negro League Football remains largely untold. From 1933 to 1946, Black athletes faced systemic racism that barred them from mainstream professional football, leading to the formation of their own teams and leagues, such as the Brown Bombers and the Chicago Comets, under the leadership of trailblazers like Duke Slater.
Negro League Football was born out of necessity, and it’s time we recognize the courage and talent of these athletes who persevered against unwavering adversity,” said Erica Ahmed, the founder of Negro League Football. My grandfather was the quarterback for the Harrisburg Trojans in 1941, they would go on to win the Negro World Championship. Among the heroes of the Negro League Football is Charles Follis, known as “The Black Cyclone,” who became the first Black professional football player in the early 1900s.
