Memphis Man Who Killed 4 In Spree Found Dead

Mavis Christian Jr., the man who prompted a manhunt after he killed four female victims and injured a fifth on Nov. 18, was found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his car on Nov. 19. According to NPR, Christian Jr committed shootings at three different locations in Memphis, which left three women and a teenage girl dead, and critically wounded another teenage girl. Memphis Police Department officers arrived on the scene where a shooting was reported at 9:22 p.m., where they found a woman who had died from a gunshot wound. Following an investigation, two other shootings were determined to be connected to the one officers responded to on Howard Drive. The two others, at Field Lark Drive and Warrington Road, were determined to be domestic violence situations, according to the police.

At Field Lark Drive police found that a woman and a 13-year-old girl had been shot and killed, while a 15-year-old girl survived, but was in critical condition. On Warrington Road, officers found another woman who had been shot and killed by Christian. According to the Associated Press, the Memphis Police Department released a statement on Nov. 19 expressing sympathy for the victims of Christian’s shootings.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic and senseless shootings on Saturday … resulting in the deaths of four innocent family members and a fifth victim critically injured,” the statement said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their loved ones as our community grieves more lives taken by domestic violence.”

Memphis Police Department Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis also provided a statement saying, “Our department continues to demonstrate an unwavering commitment towards ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents, and incidents like these shake us all to our core.”

The Memphis Police Department has consistently credited collaboration between themselves, state and federal agencies for work on the manhunt, issuing a statement on Twitter/X, “Through the collaborative effort between law enforcement, the community, and the media, the suspect was located quickly without the additional loss of lives.”
