Nationwide — Every minute you take to read this, two women will have become widows. That’s nearly 3,000 women in the United States every single day. Globally, widows face staggering statistics: 50% are plunged into poverty, and 75% lose the relationships they once relied on. The loss of a soulmate not only shatters their hearts but also devastates their lives emotionally, physically, financially, and spiritually.
Yet, despite the enormity of this crisis, widows remain an invisible population—unsupported, overlooked, and unheard. Worldwide, resources for widows are almost nonexistent. Even in the U.S., antiquated systems like Social Security fail to meet their needs, with one-third of widows ineligible due to age restrictions. The truth is undeniable: widows have been forgotten.
A Personal Story of Pain Turned to Purpose
Darlyn Turner, founder of the National Widows Association, knows this devastation all too well. At just 55, one week before her birthday, she became a widow. “It was as if my heart, my identity, and my future were ripped away all at once,” Turner recalls. “I was left emotionally broken, physically drained, and spiritually lost. The relationships I thought I could lean on disappeared, and I was thrust into a world of loneliness and uncertainty.”
As she navigated this painful journey, Darlyn discovered a harrowing reality: widows represent a 238-million-person demographic that society has all but ignored. Even churches, traditionally places of refuge, rarely provide support for widows. Determined to change this, she founded The National Widows Association (NWA) in 2019, just one year after her husband’s passing.
A Beacon of Hope for Widows Worldwide
Since its inception, NWA has become a lifeline for widows through local, national, and international initiatives. From monthly support groups and group coaching to providing medical supplies and spearheading the Widows Home Building Project, NWA has helped hundreds of women rebuild their lives.
In 2025, NWA is launching its most ambitious project yet: the “Involuntarily Single” tour. This transformational movement will shine a spotlight on the plight of widows through a new book featuring stories of heartbreak and resilience from widows from all walks of life. From famous widows to unknown hardworking housewives, this tour aims to start a global conversation, bringing together all classes, races, ethnicities, communities, and organizations to address the needs of widows.
