Nationwide — Joycelyn Wilson, a college professor of mathematics at Spelman College had been found dead, and Gary Jones, a school track and field coach remains missing after an empty boat was discovered circling Lake Oconee near Atlanta, according to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Authorities recovered the professor’s body, while the search for the coach continues.

According to Atlanta News First, Joycelyn’s body was found around 10 a.m. on Sunday. Game wardens used sonar equipment to locate her body. Wilson had been a faculty member since 2007 and was highly respected by students and colleagues.

Meanwhile, Westminster School in Atlanta identified the missing person as Gary Jones, a varsity track and field coach at the school. The school has expressed support for his safe return, with heartfelt messages from the community.

“Our entire community is praying for his safe return and for his family during this difficult moment,” the school said in a statement. “Coach Jones you are so loved and we continue to pray for your safe return.”

Jones and Wilson were engaged, according to a childhood friend of Jones. The two had reconnected after attending Clark Atlanta University together.

“I can only imagine how much Coach Jones loved her as his fiancé and our prayers are with her family and the Jones family. We are so sorry for her family’s loss,” said Kappy DeButts.

The DNR has not provided further details on where the boat was found or where the search is focused. Lake Oconee stretches from Eatonton to Madison, and the search continues in the area.
