Former Nurse Charged With Abusing Black Babies Released on $20K Bond

Nationwide — Erin Strotman, a former NICU nurse from Richmond, Virginia, is facing charges of malicious wounding and child abuse after allegedly causing bruises and fractures on babies in her care while at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. Several of the babies were African American and she is the only suspect in a broader investigation into their injuries between 2023 and 2024.

Strotman, 26, was charged with two felony counts in 2024 after a baby suffered a wrist fracture and bruises in 2024. Surveillance footage allegedly shows her mishandling a baby at the Henrico Doctors’ NICU.

Despite the allegations, Strotman was granted a $25,000 bond after a judge determined she did not pose a flight risk or danger to herself. The decision angered the families of the affected babies.

“I think we share the same feeling of anger,” Dominique Hackey, father of a baby injured in the NICU in 2023, told ABC 7 Chicago. “This is something that we were prepared for, but obviously we didn’t expect.”

Under the terms of her bond, Strotman must remain under house arrest at her parents’ home. She is prohibited from being around children or vulnerable adults and is banned from providing health care services. Her parents must also remove all firearms from their residence.

The court has sealed details of her mental health evaluation and text messages with her boyfriend. Her preliminary court hearing is scheduled for May.
