Nationwide — Shannon Rushing, an 18-year-old African American student from Ocala, Florida, was struck and killed by a car while walking to her bus stop early Monday morning. Authorities and school officials are investigating the tragic accident.
According to WCTV, Rushing, a senior at Forest High School, was hit on Northwest Old Blitchton Road near Seventh Street. She was taken to a nearby hospital but later died from her injuries.
Her sister, Shanta Norton, who has cared for her since their mother’s death, described Shannon as a joyful and determined young woman. “Shannon was a very friendly, outgoing person,” Norton said. “She had disabilities, but it didn’t stop her. She was in the Christian club, and she just joined one in school as a matter of fact, but a very outgoing person.”
Rushing had previously attended Ward-Highlands Elementary and Howard Middle School before enrolling at Forest High. Her classmates and teachers remembered her as kind, cheerful, and full of energy.
Marion County Public Schools said grief counselors have been sent to Forest High to help students and staff cope with her passing. “We are heartbroken with this news and are supporting the family and school community during this difficult time,” officials said.
Police said the investigation is ongoing, and no details about the driver have been released.
