Nationwide — Ainsley and Adrian Dondo, 22-year-old twin brothers from England, graduated from Keele University with the same biomedical science degree after four years of studying together. The brothers are now preparing for internships in Milton Keynes as they pursue careers as biomedical scientists.
The twins from Bradford, England, walked across the stage together during Keele University’s graduation ceremony after choosing the same university and field of study. They said their shared interest in science made biomedical science a natural choice for both of them.
Ainsley and Adrian also decided to attend Keele together because they wanted to support each other through the transition from high school to university. Adrian said having his twin nearby made the experience easier because they could study together, share ideas, and encourage each other through exams and assignments.
Their journey also included some friendly competition. Ainsley said, “We always end up thinking we have to one-up each other. We made these small bets, where if I got a higher grade than him, he would have to buy me a McDonald’s, for example. It was those little things that made the competitiveness.”
Adrian said their rivalry only pushed them to work harder while still supporting each other. “At the end of the day, we do wish each other the best. Obviously, we always aim to go high in our grades, but it’s just a bit of a light-hearted thing to push us more. I had a couple of exams and assignments where I did lower than Ainsley, but that’s what pushed me,” he told BBC.
The brothers lived in neighboring rooms, played on Keele’s basketball team, and helped each other through challenges during their four years at university. When Ainsley faced personal circumstances that affected his studies, Adrian supported him and helped him stay focused.
Ainsley said their similar experiences amazed them both. “Looking back, it’s incredible to see how closely our paths have mirrored each other,” he said.
After graduation, the twins will complete internships as they take their next steps toward becoming biomedical scientists. While they have shared many major milestones, they know their careers may eventually lead them in different directions.
Adrian described graduating alongside his twin brother as a memorable moment. “It felt surreal,” he said. “Walking down that aisle, hearing my name was great, and knowing my brother was right behind felt great.”
