Black Mom Survives Shooting That Tragically Killed Her Two Teen Children

Nationwide — Tiffany Terry, an African American mother from Richmond, Virginia, survived a triple shooting that killed her two children, Zion, 18, and Sadie, 14. Police say her boyfriend opened fire after an argument inside their Highland Park home and now faces charges.

Richmond police said the shooting happened last Tuesday inside the family’s residence in Highland Park. Investigators identified 41-year-old Levy Nelson, Terry’s boyfriend, as the suspect who allegedly fired during a domestic dispute. Zion Terry died on the day of the shooting. Sadie Terry later died Friday night while receiving treatment at the hospital.

Terry survived the attack with injuries and is currently recovering. She told WLBT she is focused on healing physically while dealing with the loss of both children. She said, “A mother is not supposed to bury their children, but unfortunately, this has happened to me, and it has changed me.”

Zion, the eldest, was a senior at John Marshall High School. Family and classmates described him as protective and focused on his future. After his death, students honored him by naming him prom king, a moment Terry said she deeply appreciated.

Sadie was in eighth grade at Henderson Middle School. Terry called her “Sweet Sadie” and described her as bright, kind, and full of heart. She said her daughter had a gentle presence that left a strong impact on those around her.

Terry said both children had clear goals for their futures. She shared that Sadie planned to pursue engineering and join a military program in high school. She also said Zion had planned to study nursing and continue his education in Winston-Salem.

Support has poured in from family, friends, and the wider community as Terry recovers. A GoFundMe campaign created for the family has raised more than $52,000 so far. Terry thanked everyone who sent prayers, messages, and support during this time.

Henrico police arrested Nelson hours after the shooting. He faces charges of malicious wounding and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Authorities said additional charges may still follow as the investigation continues.
