Nationwide — Two 9-year-old African American twin brothers from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, known online as the “Steel City Twinz,” became the focus of an online debate after a video showed a white man confronting them at their lemonade stand. Their mother, Sahira Iman, later spoke out after people began criticizing the family and questioning the twins’ involvement in the business.
The twins gained attention for selling lemonade under the slogan, “the world’s scary, we’re making it sweeter.” Their father, Marcus McBride, said the stand was created to spread kindness and teach his children to respond to negativity with love.
The controversy began when a man riding a bicycle approached the twins’ lemonade stand in Pittsburgh. In a video shared online, the man accused the children’s mother of exploiting them and questioned why the twins were selling lemonade.
During the exchange, the man said his comments were not about the children’s race and insisted that everyone should be treated equally. He continued criticizing the situation and accused the mother of using the children to make money, telling her, “Good luck exploiting your kids.”
The mother pushed back and questioned why the man continued confronting the family. While the argument continued, the twins appeared to ignore the confrontation and focused on interacting with customers near their stand.
After the video went viral, McBride said the family had experienced similar encounters while selling lemonade in a mostly white area of Pittsburgh. He claimed people had approached the twins before and made negative comments toward them.
“The whole point of the stand was to show love,” McBride said, according to Atlanta Black Star. “So even though people are acting that way, we should still show love.”
As the discussion around the lemonade stand grew, some people online criticized the situation and questioned whether the twins were being made to work. Iman then shared her own account of the business and her family’s involvement.
In a series of Facebook posts, Iman said she and her children were not running the Steel City Twinz social media page and never had access to it. She claimed the twins did not receive money from the lemonade stand and said they stopped selling lemonade in May.
Iman also warned people not to send money to the account linked to the page, saying it was not controlled by her or her children. She claimed McBride managed the lemonade stand, social media accounts, and the money connected to the business.
The mother also alleged that she had been in an abusive and controlling relationship with McBride. She said she left after seeking legal protection following an alleged physical assault and claimed McBride continued presenting the lemonade business online as something she and the twins were involved in.
Iman said she decided to speak publicly to address the criticism surrounding the lemonade stand and clarify her role in the business. McBride has not publicly responded to all of Iman’s latest allegations.
