Black Mom of 5 May Be Permanently Disabled After Being Attacked Following a Night Out

Nationwide — Javoni Fortner, a hardworking African American mother of five with two jobs from Houston, Texas, could possibly be permanently disabled after being attacked following a night out with friends.

Javoni reportedly decided to take some time for herself at a paint and sip event on September 29th, and after the event, Javoni took a rideshare back to her home. However, around 9:30pm, her mom, Shameka, received a call that shattered her peace.

“I heard the hysteria in her voice, and she kept crying out, ‘Mom, mom, someone tried to beat me to death with a bat,’” Shameka recalled. The police reported that Javoni appeared to have been assaulted with a club or bat, and the attacker may have fled in a black sedan.

Javoni’s injuries are severe, and her mother holds on to hope that someone will come forward with information. Although no one witnessed the attack, the family believes the suspect might be someone Javoni knew. Shameka suspects it was a person her daughter had previously rejected, and she noted that Javoni likely tried to defend herself during the assault.

“I still have the purse she was holding,” Shameka said. “If not for that purse, I might have been burying my daughter last weekend. It’s devastating to think she will be disabled for the rest of her life.” Despite the trauma, Shameka is grateful her daughter survived and is determined to see justice served.

“The capture of this person needs to be top priority,” Shameka stressed. “There’s no telling how many times he’s done this before.” The family is urging anyone with information to come forward and help with the investigation.

To manage the mounting medical expenses, the Fortner family has launched a GoFundMe page. They are also deeply thankful to the individual who found Javoni and called 911, a gesture that played a crucial role in saving her life.
