Nationwide — Thomas and Ernestine Price, an African American couple from Columbus, Ohio, recently celebrated their 78th wedding anniversary. From childhood sweethearts to raising a family that now spans five generations, they say honesty has been the key to their lasting bond.
According to 11Alive, the two first met in 1940 when Ernestine moved to Columbus at age 11. Thomas knew her through his friend, who is her cousin, and quickly declared, “I’m going to marry that girl.” They courted as teenagers while her sisters and relatives watched over them, as was tradition at the time.
Their relationship endured separation during World War II. While Thomas served in the Navy, he wrote letters to Ernestine, who was finishing high school. That connection kept them connected until his return in 1946.
That same year, Thomas proposed on Mother’s Day. On Sept. 10, 1947, the couple got married on the front porch of Ernestine’s home.
Together, they built a life in Columbus, raising three children: one son and two daughters. Their family grew to include nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
In their younger years, the couple enjoyed skating and movie nights. These days, they focus on health and safety, spending their time together quietly at home.
When asked about the secret to a successful marriage, Ernestine was direct. She said, “No secrets between the couple. That’s not going to work because everything comes out sooner or later.”
Even after nearly eight decades, their affection remains strong. When Ernestine asked Thomas if he would marry her again, he answered without hesitation, “Yeah.” Ernestine replied, “Oh, you would? I think I’ll keep you, too. How about that?”
