Nationwide — King “KJ” Hogan, an 8-year-old African American boy from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was severely injured after being hit by a car while walking home from school. The driver fled the scene, and police are still searching for the suspect.
The crash happened on October 14 near 35th and Scott streets. According to Fox 6 Now, KJ and his siblings were crossing the street when a gray SUV ran a red light and struck him. Witnesses said all other cars had stopped, but the SUV kept going.
KJ’s mother, Mildred Boyd, said the impact threw her son into the air before he landed face-first on the pavement. His siblings witnessed the crash.
“He was just in the ICU. He has to have face reconstruction. He broke his jaw. Four of his front teeth are permanently gone,” Boyd said. Doctors may also need to wire his mouth shut.
Boyd added that her older children saw the driver look back briefly before speeding away. “He is traumatized after this, all he keeps saying is he don’t want to play no more,” Boyd said. “How dare you? You know you hit a child and continued to go.”
Investigators believe a nearby Milwaukee County Transit System bus may have recorded the crash. Police are reviewing footage and asking anyone with information to come forward as they continue to search for the suspect and the gray SUV involved.
“It’s the reckless driving, no care for human beings, for the streets,” the mother said. “It’s a red light for a reason. It don’t mean still go, or I can make it. It means stop.”
A GoFundMe page has been created to help cover KJ’s medical expenses and ongoing treatment. It has raised nearly $6,000 so far.
