70-Year-Old Mom Faces Murder Charges for Holding Man in a Chokehold While Her Daughter Beat Him to Death

Nationwide — Dorothy Lowery, 70, and her daughter, Yolanda R. Lowery, 54, both from Canton, Ohio, have been charged with murder after allegedly attacking and killing a man later found dead in Akron. Investigators believe the two women acted together during the deadly assault.

The victim, identified as 54-year-old Jerry L. Morris, was discovered dead on August 1 outside a vacant house on Lake Street in Akron. The Summit County Medical Examiner determined he died from multiple blunt-force injuries, according to the Canton Repository.

According to court records, Yolanda repeatedly struck Morris while her mother restrained him in a chokehold. Police believe the attack happened in the 1200 block of Logan Avenue NW in Canton before Morris’s body was found in Akron.

Canton Police Chief John Gabbard said Akron police contacted Canton detectives on August 16 to share information. After reviewing the evidence together, investigators concluded that the homicide took place in Canton.

The Lowerys were arrested at their home on October 21 by members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force and are now being held at the Stark County Jail.

Authorities had previously filed misdemeanor assault charges against both women related to the same incident, but those charges were dismissed on August 19. Chief Assistant Prosecutor Kristina M. Lockwood said the case was reclassified after the victim’s death was confirmed.

Police continue to investigate and urge anyone with information to come forward.
