35-Year-Old Black Mom of 5 Dies After Long Battle with Terminal Cancer

Nationwide — Kourtni Smith, a mother of 5 from PG County, Maryland, recently died in hospice care, surrounded by family. Diagnosed with Stage 3 invasive lobular carcinoma in 2021, Smith fought hard as the cancer spread to her brain, and doctors initially gave her only a few months to live.

Smith’s cousin, Tracee Powell, confirmed her passing. “She would want you all to know so you can let people know she fought a good fight and now she’s in heaven with her ancestors,” She told WUSA9.

By April 2021, Smith’s condition had progressed to Stage 4. Despite her grim diagnosis, she focused on securing her family’s future. She started writing a children’s book for her youngest son, who was only two years old when she was diagnosed.

Smith, who was only 35 years old, endured three rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, followed by three weeks in hospice care. Defying the odds, she lived long enough to spend Christmas 2023 with her children. The family also took one final trip to Disney World to create lasting memories.

Her community came together to support her, helping cover medical expenses. A GoFundMe she personally started raised nearly $130,000 to assist with funeral costs and provide for her family after her passing.

Powell recalled her final moments, emphasizing Smith’s unwavering faith. “She was in a lot of pain and uncomfortable. I told her I loved her and how God was going to lead and guide her,” she said.
