According to People, Tracy, 54, now lives in South Carolina with André’s father, sister, and nephew. When André came up with the idea of paying off her mortgage last year, he kept the plan a secret, only confiding in a cousin. To gather the necessary details, he cleverly asked his mother for a copy of her mortgage statement, pretending it was to compare with his own. After months of delays, Tracy finally sent the statement in December 2023, allowing André to move forward with his plan.
Despite personal setbacks, including a stolen car, a home burglary, and managing properties in multiple cities, André remained determined to meet his goal. Although his original plan to surprise his mom in September was interrupted by Hurricane Helene, André paid off the mortgage remotely and asked his sister to record Tracy’s reaction. Caught on camera in her sweats rather than dressed for work, Tracy jokingly asked, “Why would you do that to me?” when André later shared the video on Instagram.
André was moved by the visible relief on his mother’s face when she learned the mortgage was paid. After 20 years of making payments, Tracy was now a proud homeowner without financial burden. “Especially in the Black community, being able to pass down a home is significant,” André says, reflecting on the importance of this milestone.
The video has since gone viral on Instagram and X, with many praising André’s thoughtful act. He is humbled by the positive comments, especially from strangers who celebrated his mom’s dedication and the love she raised him with. “Ordinary people can do extraordinary things for others every day,” André says, noting that while there were many ways to use his money, paying off his mom’s mortgage was the most meaningful gift he could give.
